Tsunami Museum
One of the destination place available in Aceh is a museum where it exist in Banda Ache, the capital city of Aceh Province. The museum is a design for a symbolic monument representing the earth quake and tsunami occurred in Hindia in 2004. It is also as an education center for disaster and emergency protection shelter if in the future the tsunami ever happens again.
This museum itself has a building structure consist of four floor with the size of 2.500 m². The curved wall of the museum is covered with geometrical sculpture and motive. Inside the museum, the visitor enter through a narrow and dark hallway between two high water wall to be able to recreate the situation, panic and distress when the tsunami occurred.
The wall of this museum is decorated by images of people dancing Saman. The name ‘Saman’ itself is a name of Aceh’s popular traditional dancing. Those images in the wall representing the symbol of the strength, discipline and the religious beliefs of Aceh tribe. In the top of the museum, the roof exist as if it is shaping the sea waves.
In this museum, there is a special memorial hall in order to reminisce or to remember the victims upon the tsunami disaster in 2004 ago. In this hall, the names of the victims is carved into the wall and in the top corner of the wall there is a carving with an arabic letter read as ‘Allah’, the name of the God spelled in Islamic religion. This hall is also known and it is called the Space of Sorrow or Sumur Doa in Indonesian language.
