For those who want to seek for a place that contains high valuable history for the people of Aceh and among Indonesian people respectively in Aceh, Masjid Raya Baiturrahman is considered for one of those place. Since it was originally built on the first hand by Sultan Iskandar Muda in 1612 until now Masjid Raya Baiturrahman is still exists in the center of Banda Aceh.

Masjid Raya Baiturrahman was burnt down in an aggression of VOC (Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie) which is a trading company originated from Netherland.

After four years since the burnt down in 1873, Masjid Raya Baiturrahman was rebuilt based on the promise which is given from General Major Vander is appointed at that time as the military governor for Aceh.

It has undergoing several renovations and expansions until now on. When the tsunami occurred and flooded Aceh, many of the local residents headed to Masjid Raya Baiturrahman to take cover and stay in order to evade the effect of tsunami. Masjid Raya Baiturrahman is one of several building which is safe and doesn’t even took any serious damage during the tsunami in 2004.
